Studies on antibacterial action of chlor amphenicol in combination with other antibiotics against chloramphenicol resistant S.typhi

Abstract
Although the emergence of chloramphenicol(CM) resistant strains of S. typhi is rare despite of exclusive use of CM against typhoid infectian, increas~:d incidences of CM resistant strain, along with the multiple resistant strains mediated by R factors, have been reported in recent years.
For the purpose to evaluate the effects of CM in combination with other antibiotcs against CM resistant S. typhi, in vitro experiments with trypticase soy broth and trypticase soy agar were carried out with 9 high CM resistant and 3 standard strains.
Test strains were highly sensitive to ampicillin and :moderately sensitive to kanamycin but the actions were not elevated apparently when ampicillin was combined with CM although slight additive effects were observed in some strains on trypticase soy agar, on tha other hand, antibacterial action were enhanced when kanamycin was combined with CSI. Gentamicin was less active to S. typhi but highly bactericidal and no enhancing effects were detected combined with C\I. Streptomycin was inactive singly but when combined with either ampicillin or kanamycin exhibited a synergism against some strains. Drastic synergistic actians were observed when kanamycin was combined with ampicillin.
